Choice #1: “We never know how high we are” by Emily Dickinson
Why i chose this poem:
I chose this poem because to me it was cheerful and encouraging. Encouragement is something useful in the first year of the architecture program, especially after hearing about all those sleepless nights. Even though this poem was the shortest one on our list, I still feel like it said a lot. While reading it, I could already see a structure building itself. I also chose this poem because it’s right to the point and simple but yet full.
My interpretation of the poem:
This poem says that we don’t think about how low we are until somebody points it out and tells us to bring ourselves up. Then we realize that we’re low and then we try to rise. If we really try and keep working on it, there’s no limit on how high we can get. Then it keeps saying that you should keep doing the heroic acts and you will be at the top. Basically encourages you for success.
Choice #2: “Alone” by Maya Angelou
Why I chose this poem:
I chose this poem because it appealed to me. It was saying how nobody can make it alone and I strongly agree with that. I’m the kind of person that likes company and likes having someone by my side. Being lonely is like a fear and this poem in a way represents that being alone is something to fear. It also makes you show sympathy to the ones that are by your side.
My interpretation of the poem:
This poem basically says that everyone needs someone to be with and they cannot survive alone. No matter if you are poor and barely making it through or wealthy and live a rich life, you still need someone to be there for you. That is pretty much what it talks about.
